This chimney stands about 75 yards uphill of the right bank of French Broad River in Madison County near the county seat of Marshall. I like it because it incorporates brick, stone and cement; its present form discloses several stages of construction and a not a few repairs. Regarding it lets me imagine the builder's satisfaction in physically shaping a piece of nature that kept people warm and fed and maybe even scared away predators.
